Retired Lt. Col. Charles W. Howard of Hewitt, a retiree from the U.S. Army and the City of Waco, Texas, died on Oct. 26, 1995.

Military graveside services were held at Waco Memorial Park on Nov. 1.

Mr. Howard was born Nov. 2, 1920, in Table Grove, a son of Charles W. Howard, Sr. and Gladys Fordyce Howard.

He graduated from Table Grove High School and was a graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb. He was Director of Athletics and Coach at Astoria High School until drafted into the U.S. Army as a private. He graduated from Officers Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., in December, 1943, and was appointed to the United States Regular Officer Corps in 1948. He retired in 1966 from the U.S. Army. He fought in two campaigns in Europe and was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for Heroic Achievement and the Purple Heart for wounds received. Upon his retirement from the Army, Mr. Howard worked for the Texas Youth Council for seven years as a caseworker supervisor before joining the City Government of Waco in 1974. He retired from the City of Waco in 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Bettye Howard; a daughter, Barbara Richard of Carrollton, Texas; two sons, Rodney Howard of Waco, Texas, and Jeffrey Howard of Valley Mills, Texas; two sisters, Norma Mounts of Macomb and Ramona Stracker of Table Grove; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Lee Howard, and his parents.

Connally-Compton West Waco Drive Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
