Five Killed In Head-On Crash

Five persons were killed Tuesday night in a two-car head-on accident on U.S. 24 near Mt. Sterling.

The dead were identified as Frank Martin, 16, Daniel R. Parker, 16, Wayne Holtkamp, 50, his wife, Rosalie, 43, and a Holtkamp daughter, Vanessa, 15.

The only survivor of the accident was the Holtkamp’s son, William, 12. He was in serious condition at a Springfield hospital.

All the victims were Mt. Sterling area residents.

A car driven by Parker of Mt. Sterling reportedly was going west on 24 and lost control after the auto’s wheels dropped off the road on the north side. Parker allegedly pulled back on the road and crossed the center line crashing head-on with an auto going east driven by Holtkamp of Mt. Sterling. Parker’s car then slid down a 100-foot embankment on the south side of the road, the Holtkamp auto spun around and came to rest in the eastbound lane.

Funeral arrangements for the five victims are pending and will be announced later by Hufnagel Funeral Chapel in Mt. Sterling.

Mrs. Holtkamp is the former Rosalie Ralston, daughter of Louis Ralston of Frederick. She was a sister of Mrs. Robert (Rita) Jones of Astoria.
