Floyd Bates Haffner, 26-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haffner of Canton, who until a year ago had lived their entire lives in Browning township is Schuyler county’s second young man to give his life in the defense of our country in the World War II. He had been in the navy for three years, enlisting at Quincy in January, 1939.

Word of his death was officially received Monday of this week by his sister, Mrs. Lloyd Mathis of Browning, in a telegram from the war department, which stated that Floyd “had been missing in action since December 7.” It was erroneously reported last week that word had been received by his family that he was safe.

In a letter received by The Times from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haffner, this (Wednesday) morning, notice is given that memorial services for their son will be held at the Methodist church in Browning, Sunday afternoon, December 28, at ____ o’clock.

Floyd Bates Haffner was born in Browning township, Schuyler county, June 22, 1915, a son of Charles and Ida Bates Haffner, and was killed in action at sea in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Sunday, December 7, at the age of 26 years, 5 months and 15 days.

He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haffner, of Canton, three sisters, Mrs. Marvin McMullen of Canton, Mrs. Geneva Busby of Canton, and Mrs. Eva Mathis of Browning, and two brothers, Robert Haffner of Galesburg and Harold Haffner of Canton, beside a host of other relatives and friends.

Floyd was of a sunny disposition and was loved by all who knew him. He attended Sunday school regularly and when on leave in the navy, he would go to church and Sunday school as often as possible. He was a First Class Fireman.
