Melvin Gain

Melvin A. "Sam" Gain, 83, of Bushnell died at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Astoria, a son of William and Cordelia Mae Onion Gain. He married Elizabeth M. Black on Dec. 8, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo. She died Jan. 5, 1993.

He also was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Gary of Atlanta, Ga., and Bill of Sheridan, Wyo.; one daughter, Debbie (and Robert) Wilbern of Petersburg; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond of Boca Raton, Fla.

He and his wife operated a floral business in Astoria starting in 1942 and Gain Greenhouse in Bushnell and Astoria from 1954 to 1976. He worked as a horticulture caretaker at the Western Illinois University library for several years.

Services were held today at 11 a.m. at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery in Astoria.
