Ephraim Spangler Fitz, son of Henry and Mary Spangler Fitz, was born Sept. 26, 1861 near Astoria. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 24, at his home in Red Cloud, Neb., at the age of 89 years and 28 days.

He resided at the place of his birth until 1879, when he went to live with his grandfather, John Fitz at Panora, Iowa, for three years, when the country was yet new.

He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Worshek at Guthrie Center, Iowa, Feb. 23, 1883. To this union were born six children, four daughters and two sons, all living: Mrs. Emma Blickenstaff of Seibert, Colo., Mrs. Viola Armstrong of Guide Rock, Effie L. Fitz, at home, Mrs. Fern Hunter of Clarinda, Iowa, Henry C. Fitz of Inavale, and John R. Fitz of Guide Rock.

After his marriage he and his bride moved on a farm in Illinois. In 1893 they moved back to Iowa and remained until the spring of 1895 when they again moved to Illinois.

In the spring of 1904 he and his wife and family moved to Red Cloud on a farm he purchased south of the Republican River in Garfield Precinct.

In 1908 they moved north of Red Cloud and continued farming until in 1921 when he built a new house in town and retired from farming and worked at the carpenter trade which he followed until the infirmities of age compelled him to quit.

Early in life he united with the Church of the Brethren and from the very beginning of his Christian life was earnest and active in the life of the church, having served as chorister, teacher, superintendent, and also as deacon. He was a charter member of the Farmer’s Union Local 1222 of Red Cloud.

He leaves with his passing, six children, sixteen grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great, great-granddaughters.

His life companion, Mary Worshek, preceded him in death Jan. 8, 1940, and his brother Emanuel H. Fitz on June 5, 1948.
