DELTA ENGLISH

Miss Delta English Died Very Suddenly Thursday Evening

This community was shocked Friday morning to learn of the death of Miss Delta English, who died suddenly at her home in the southeast part of town, Thursday evening at 9:30. She had been in poor health for sometime, but her illness was not thought to be serious. She was feeling badly Thursday evening and her sister, Mrs. Nan Barker, went home to be with her a little while. She suddenly grew worse, the doctor and other relatives were called but in a short time she had passed away.

Miss Delta English, daughter of John and Christina English of Astoria, was born at Astoria, Ill., into a family of 12 children, 5 of whom preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Astoria and of the Astoria Christian church. She united with the Astoria Christian church about 40 years ago when Rev. Gash was holding a meeting here and remained a member until she answered the summons of the angel of death.

The sudden call came as a shock to her many friends and loved ones. She was ever faithful to her church and always willing to help in any way, those who needed it. Even in the last hours of her life with us she attended the funeral of Mrs. Horn to comfort and help, although she was sick in body at the time. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances, and she will be greatly missed in the community and the church. Her last words, when her sister asked that she allow them to get another doctor, were: “No doctor but the Divine One can help me now.”

She leaves to mourn her death: Mrs. Belle Boyd, Mrs. W. B. Wolf, Mrs. Nan English Barker, Carl English, W. M. English, all of Astoria, and Mrs. Elizabeth Vance of Macomb, Ill., beside a host of other relatives and friends.

She has gone from our midst; but let us look out through the haze, and as we look by faith let us hear the words of the Apostle Paul as he says, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. For I am a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better.”

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Astoria Christian church, E. W. Braun officiating, assisted by Rev. E. O. Norris. Burial at Astoria cemetery.
