Vernon DeanRev. Vernon Fred Dean, 90, of Franklin Grove died July 8, 2018, at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Ill.

He was born July 7, 1928, in Chicago, a son of Fred Vernon and Margaret Ruth Schmidt Dean. He married Edna Fay Lein on June 18, 1955, in Chicago. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gary (and Martha) Dean of Callaway, Va.; one daughter, Evelyn Leyva of Lombard; one sister, Susan (and Gregory) Zalewski of Addison; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son as a toddler, Bruce Allan Dean; and one brother, Allan Dean.

He was a meat cutter at Jewel for over 30 years and was called into the ministry in 1988, and the last church he pastored was the Franklin Grove Church of the Brethren, prior to his retirement in 2014.

He was very involved in the church. He served his country in the United States Army and was a member of VFW Post #540 in Dixon. He was a member of the Meat Cutter’s Union, served as a Boy Scout Leader and attended Dixon Church of the Brethren.

Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at Dixon Church of the Brethren, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the church with the Rev. Blaine Miner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oakridge/Glen Oak Cemetery in Hillside at a later date. Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Camp Emmaus in Mount Morris.
