Carl CableCarl A. Cable, 88, of Cerro Gordo died Oct. 19, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 6, 1935, in Decatur, a son of Amos and Myrtle Blickenstaff Cable. He married Wilma Meyerholz on June 13, 1964, in Cerro Gordo. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jeanie Ashenfelter Sager (and Paul) of Astoria and Rhonda Ashenfelter Higgs (and Daniel) of Gallatin, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law, Connie Ashenfelter of Cerro Gordo; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis Cable and Bryce Ashenfelter; one brother, Howard Cable; and two sisters, Betty Shockey and Marjorie Thompson.

He proudly served our country in the US Army where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He managed Cerro Gordo Lumber Company for several years. Later, he worked as a lead operator in maintenance at Firestone for 27 years until his retirement. He also was a carpenter, and he built the family home in Cerro Gordo. He was a member of Cerro Gordo Church of the Brethren and a member of the Lions Club for 50 years.

A memorial service was held Monday at Cerro Gordo Church of the Brethren. He was laid to rest at Cerro Gordo Cemetery. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials in his honor may be made to Cerro Gordo Fire Protection District Volunteers.
