Travis H. Cox, 85, of Vermont died at 11:49 a.m. Dec. 24, 2012, at his home.

He was born Feb. 26, 1927, in Vermont, the son of Henry Monroe and Dessie Mildred Chenoweth Cox. He married Marjorie Jean Negley on Sept. 30, 1949, in Table Grove. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Kenny (and Becky) Cox of Beardstown; two daughters, Marcella (and Larry) Felker of Reno, Nev., and Sandy (and Ken) Riddle of Springfield; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one infant sister.

He was an Army veteran serving from 1945-47. He then entered Illinois National Guard, retiring from Camp Lincoln in 1986. He was Assistant Instructor for Officer Candidate School and was on the Illinois National Guard National Match Rifle Team for over 30 years.

He retired from Illinois National Guard. He worked for the federal government in Civil Service as a mechanic, retiring in 1982.

He was a farmer. He also was a former VIT substitute school bus driver. He served as Vermont Township Tax Assessor.

He was a member of Vermont Christian Church where he was an Elder and served on the Church Board as a Trustee.

Services were held Friday at Vermont Christian Church with Pastor Dave Vandeman officiating. Burial was in Vermont Cemetery with military rites provided by Vermont American Legion Post #26. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Vermont Christian Church or Vermont Rescue Squad.
