James S. Conlee, 81, of Palos Hills, formerly of Beardstown and Waverly, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago.

He was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Jacksonville, the son of Roy and Nellie Stout Conlee. He married Charlotte Trone. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jackie Hayes of Jacksonville and Charma Wicks of Palos Heights; one son, R.G. of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific. He was a graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville and Vandercook College of Music in Chicago. A member of United Federation of Musicians, he was a professional musician for 65 years. He was a band leader and trumpet player. A member of National Education Association, he was a music teacher for 33-1/2 years, teaching at Waverly, Beardstown and Chicago County High School No. 218.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. James Shirley officiating. Burial was in Bader Cemetery.
