Dorothy BattertonDorothy R. Batterton, 84, of Astoria died at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2006, at her childhood home near Summum.

She was born July 2, 1921, in Isabel Township, Fulton County, a daughter of Harry C. and Dorothy M. Barnes Graham. She married Russell F. Batterton on March 23, 1946, in Ipava.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda (and Conrad) Clark of Summum; one sister, Rose Anderson of Vermont; and two grandsons.

She graduated from Astoria High School in 1939 by becoming a mother's helper to the sons of Ralph and Frieda Renner to earn funds and ease the winter commute. She graduated from Western Illinois University. She taught at both the Freeman and Cooper schools in South Fulton. She spent 38 years as a teacher, retiring in 1986.

She was a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She also was a member of Astoria Christian Church.

Private family services will be held at Summum Cemetery at a later date. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at Astoria High School.
