DORA BELLE (SWITZER) BECK BOYD

Obituary of Mrs. Dora Boyd

Mrs. Dora Belle Boyd, wife of the late Samuel W. Boyd, passed away at her home adjoining the Whiteflock church, near Fandon, Tuesday, June 10, 1930, after a one day illness of neuralgic heart trouble, aged 65 years, 9 months, 18 days.

She was born near Astoria, Ill., August 22, 1864, being the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Nebergall Switzer, now deceased. She had ten brothers and sisters: Samuel, Harvey, David, Walter, Warren, George, Mary, Eliza, Sarah and Melba, none of whom are living except Harvey Switzer of near Colchester and Mrs. Eliza Ludlum Wheeler of Savonberg, Kansas.

In early youth she united with the Church of the Brethren and remained a loyal and devoted member, living a life of Christian service.

She lived near Astoria until after her marriage to Joseph L. Beck and later moved to a farm southwest of Fandon in 1896. Having no little ones of their own, they took into their hearts and their home a little boy [film scratched — illegible] who has been a loyal son and to whom she gave a mother’s devotion. He and his wife drove down from their home in Hammond, Ind., when they learned of her illness. She also tenderly cared for her father who was an invalid the closing years of his life.

Mr. Beck passed away March 6, 1900, and in July [film scratched — illegible] she was united in marriage with Samuel W. Boyd in whose home were three motherless daughters who found in her a wise counselor and friend. The youngest step-daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Holstine, wife of James G. Holstine, passed away Aug. 31, 1916, leaving three children, Garold, Otho and Mary. The other two are Mrs. Pearl Kenneday, who with her husband and sons, Howard and Ralph, live near Plymouth, and Mrs. Iona Shelley, who with her husband and children, Dale, Hazel and Dean, live in Bethel township. After many months of illness caused by anemia, Mr. Boyd passed away May 19, 1929.

Funeral services were held at the Dunkard church in Bethel township at 2:00 o’clock, June 12, Rev. F. W. Leonard of Blandinsville, officiating. — Colchester Independent.
