Charles R. Attkisson, 84, of St. David died at 12:48 p.m. June 6, 2008, at Heartland Healthcare Center in Canton.

He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Antlers, Okla., a son of Upshaw Buchanan and Violet Lee Tyler Attkisson. He married Almedia Elizabeth McNeese on July 13, 1946, in Pulaski, Tenn. She died June 1, 2002.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two daughters and caregiver Joy (and David) Nidiffer of Canton and Jan (and Richard) Cooper of Houston, Texas; one son, Kenney (and Patti) Attkisson of Hanna City; three sisters, Elenor England, Margaret McCormick and Dot Hardison, all of Columbia, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He served as a pharmacist mate in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He was a welder at Caterpillar in East Peoria for 30 years and farmed for 30 years for the Schmidgall family of Mackinaw.

He was a member of Canton Church of Christ and UAW Local 974 of East Peoria.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Kenney Attkisson officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the memorial home. Burial will be in Ipava Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church.
