Donald AzbellDonald Azbell, 87, of Ipava died at 2:34 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center emergency room in Springfield.

He was born March 12, 1917, in Ipava, a son of Edward and Zena M. Nelson Azbell. He married Laura May Ellison on June 21, 1952, in Ipava. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Scott Azbell of Ipava; and two brothers, Wayne of Ipava and Kenneth (and Jane) of Greenfield.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond; two sisters, Irene Breitengross and an infant sister; and two half brothers, Lyman Azbell and John Azbell.

He was a World War II Army sergeant, serving in Germany and Japan from 1942 to 1946. He served in the 797th Ordnance L M 97th Division.

He was owner and operator of Azbell's Hardware in Ipava for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He also was a rural mail carrier for over 40 years, retiring in March 1984.

He was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association and was past president of the Fulton County Rural Mail Carriers Association. He was a member of Ipava American Legion Post 17 for over 50 years.

He was a member of Ipava Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.

Services were held Saturday at his church with Rev. Bill Bodamer officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Ipava Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church or Ipava American Legion Post 17.
