Joseph S. Alvadj, 86, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.

He was born March 20, 1911, in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, a son of Stephan and Eva Cosic Alvadj. He married Ramona McCormick on Aug. 11, 1933, at Fort Sheridan. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jobyna Logue of Champaign and Beverly Geroux of Waukesha, Wis.; two sons, Gordon Alvadj of Niceville, Fla., and Preston Alvadj of Champaign; 17 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter and one sister.

He served for 40 years in the U.S. Army and retired with the rank of master sergeant. He served in the horse cavalry and infantry and as an ordnance specialist. He served in Italy and Germany during World War II. He was a Roman Catholic and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1288 at Champaign and the Neenah-Menasha, Wis., Elks Club.

Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Owens Funeral Home with Rev. David Erickson officiating. Burial was in Danville National Cemetery in Danville.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
