Dennis Robert Yates, 71, of Rushville died at 4:38 a.m. Oct. 13, 2016, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
He was born Dec. 25, 1944, in Macomb, a son of Howard “Bill” and Hazel Irene Lung Yates. He married Sheila Carmichael on April 26, 1975, in St. Lucie, Fla. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mary Ann (and Aaron) Yates Hard of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Steven D. Yates of Camden; one sister, Dianne (and Warren) Filbert of Columbia, Mo.; one nephew; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one infant brother, Richard Yates.
He was an U.S. Army Veteran serving for six years. His overseas assignments were in West Germany, Okinawa and Viet Nam. He was a Veteran of the Viet Nam Tet Offensive. His occupation in the military was a Missile Radar Repairman. After discharge from the military, he worked for the telephone company for years. He was the owner/operator of Yates Flying Service for years. He worked in the maintenance department at Cargill Meat Solutions in Beardstown for eight years before retiring.
He was a member of the former Camden Bethany Church. He was a member of the Camden Lodge #648 AF & AM, Beardstown Guthrie Pierce Post #1239 VFW, Vintage Iron Riders and the American Pool Association. He served two terms as Alderman of Rushville Ward #2 from 1985-91 and was Mayor of Rushville two terms from 1991-99, when he chose not to seek re-election.
Cremation has been accorded. Memorial services were held Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Larry DeSha officiating. Military rites were conducted by Schuyler American Legion Post #4, Guthrie Pierce VFW Post #1239 and an Army honors detail.
