Nancy Wickwire

Nancy D. Hughes Wickwire, 72, of Florence, Ala., died June 30, 2022.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Wickwire; three children, Stacy (and Greg) Morris, Sarah (and Berry) Allen and James Wickwire; one sister, Connie (and Randy) Connour; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two siblings, Janice K. Fisk and Phillip Batterton.

She was a 1967 graduate of VIT High School and a 1971 graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb. During summer breaks, she served as a hospital aide.

Upon graduation from college and certified as an elementary school teacher, she taught school for many years. In later years, she served as a Census Enumerator, Director of a day care and later served in Florence City Schools in Title 1, reading and mathematics.

She held leadership positions in the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter S, Alabama, for 10 years. She was in the choir for approximately 20 years at Westminster Presbyterian Church and helped with church dinners. She was a volunteer at the Help Center and Safeplace.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 16, at the Ipava Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Safeplace in Florence, Ala., or to Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.
