Gerald WingerterGerald D. Wingerter, 81, of Astoria died at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 27, 2011, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born Sept. 18, 1930, in Canton, a son of Merrill H. and Lillian Wolfe Baxter Wingerter. He married Betty M. Niederer Stage on Dec. 9, 1966, in Havana. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Robbin (and Jodie) Kost of Astoria and Raedene Doxsie of Creve Coeur; five sons, Michael Wingerter of Peoria, Richard (and Vicki) Stage of Dunfermline, Ronald (and Donna) Stage of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Wingerter of Pensacola, Fla., and Rodney (and Terry) Stage of Hopedale; one sister, Melba (and Joseph) Picton of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Warren (and Carol) Baxter of Fairview; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Wingerter.

He was a United States Navy Veteran.

He retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company, International Harvester-Navistar and Wal-Mart in Macomb.

He was a 1951 graduate of Canton High School.

Services were held Sunday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Gary Sheets officiating. Cremation has been accorded. Private burial will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the family to be disbursed at a later date to the charity of the family's choice.
