Donald W. Werland, 80, of Cuba, died at 10:37 a.m. Nov. 5, 2006, at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton.

He was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Rock Falls, a son of Albert and Martha Egeland Werland. He married Arlene L. Schultz on April 12, 1946, in Rock Falls. She died Sept. 19, 1999.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Surviving is one son, Mark (and Chris) of Smithfield; and two grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947, and was a member of Cuba American Legion Post 533.

He was a graduate of Rock Falls High School Class of 1944, where he was a member of the Sports Hall of Fame.

He worked at the former Canton Works of International Harvester Co., retiring in 1982. He was a former member of Rock Falls Optimist Club, Canton Elks, Wee Ma Tuk Hills Country Club, Canton Country Club and Canton YMCA.

Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Cuba with Rev. Joe Tomich officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the memorial home. A graveside committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Sterling, where military rites will be accorded.
