Merle WallerMerle E. Waller, 70, of Normal, formerly of Vermont, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 20, 1934, in Colchester, a son of James and Alta McKinnon Waller. He married Patricia Wilson on June 5, 1955, in Prairie City. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Debbie (and Jerry) Custer of Morton, Teresa Felgenhauer of Anderson, Ind., and Becky (and John) Peacock of Normal; one son, Scott of Chicago; six grandchildren; eight sisters, Virginia (and Harold) Helms of Bushnell, Barbara (and Don) Shook of Monterey, Calif., Anabelle (and Lawrence) McCoy of Monmouth, Helen (and Ocie) Baldwin and June (and Ben) Mecum, both of Swan Creek, Evelyn Waller of Chatham, Jeanie Plate of Good Hope, and May (and Jerry) Mohr of Arebelia, Mo; and one brother, Bill Waller of San Jose, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; one grandson; three brothers, Elmo, Paul and Glenn; and one sister, Beulah Waller.

He worked for Bader & Co. for six years and Douglas Oil Co. for six years. He then worked for AMAX Coal Co. for 23 years, retiring in 1989, and was co-owner of Wall-Bean Skating Rink in Vermont.

He was a member of Vermont Odd Fellows Lodge, Vermont Kiwanis Club, Vermont Park Board and Vermont Fire Department, and founder of the Vermont Fireworks Celebration.

He also was a member of Vermont Christian Church, where he served as elder and taught Sunday school, and Eastview Christian Church of Bloomington.

Services were held Tuesday at Vermont Christian Church with Rev. John Derry officiating. Burial was in the Vermont Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava was in charge of arrangements.
