Berneita Waughtel

Berneita M. Waughtel, 61, of Cuba, died at her residence at 3:40 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 1996.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1934, in Fulton County, a daughter of Harry and Vera (Putman) George. She married Clayton L. Waughtel Jr. on Aug. 9, 1953, at Cuba. He survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Monte Lee Waughtel, Bobby Jay Waughtel, and John Dee Waughtel, all of Cuba; one daughter, Valerie Lynn of Anamossa, Iowa; seven grandsons; three granddaughters; one sister, Maralee Mason of Cuba; and one brother, Marion George of Delevan.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

She and her husband had owned and operated the former Waughtel Furniture in Cuba. They also founded Waughtel Upholstery in Cuba, and operated the business for more than 20 years until retiring in 1993. Mrs. Waughtel was an active member of the Cuba Christian Church; The Order of Eastern Star in Cuba and Ipava. She was a 20 year member and past President of the Cuba Business Association. She was a long time member of the Spoon River Scenic Drive Association. She was a past chairman of the Spoon River Scenic Drive, and had also previously served as the Cuba coordinator for the Scenic Drive. She was a graduate of the LPN school at Spoon River College. She had previously been employed at the Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba. She had been both a 20-year sponsor and bowler on the Commercial-ette Bowling League in Canton.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Henry Memorial Home in Cuba with Rev. Ken Bloyd officiating. Cremation was according following funeral services. Private burial of the cremains will be in the Cuba Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spoon River Hospice of Graham Hospital in Canton.
