Elizabeth Winbigler

Word has been received from Iowa City, Iowa, as to the death of Miss Elizabeth Winbigler, a former Table Grove High School teacher. The obituary follows:

Elizabeth Winbigler, 87, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Thursday, July 13, 1995, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born Jan. 24, 1908 in Warren County, Ill.

Survivors include two brothers, H. Donald Winbigler of Los Altos Hills, Calif., R. Ted Winbigler of Glascow, Ky.; three sisters, Mary Coriden of Washington, D.C., Maxine Menely of Minneapolis, Minn., and Juanita Reinhard of Arlington Heights, Ill.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

She graduated from Monmouth High School and received her A.B. degree from Monmouth College in 1931. She taught Latin and English in Table Grove for a number of years, until moving to Iowa City in 1937. She then joined the staff at City High School, where she taught English and was a counselor until retiring in 1973. In her retirement she had been active working in the Old Capitol Gift Shop until 1987. She was a member of the Field Service Board, Pi Beta Phi, City High Honorary Hall of Fame, Zerwas Circle and Woman’s Council. She was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held Monday at her church with Rev. Tom Finley Brown officiating. Burial was in Monmouth Cemetery, Monmouth.

George L. Gay Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Elizabeth Winbigler Scholarship Fund at City High School or the First Presbyterian Church.
