Jennifer VolkJennifer L. (McCombs) Volk, 74, of Mount Sterling died July 15, 2021, at 10:25 a.m. surrounded by her husband, Larry and her three children.

She was born May 28, 1947, in Rushville, a daughter of Leland Archie and Wilma Mae Bartlett McCombs. She married Lawrence “Larry” F. Volk on Nov. 15, 1969, in Mount Sterling. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Dawn (and Douglas) Dunn of Mount Sterling and Elizabeth “Liz” (and Aaron) Garrett of Perry; one son, Todd (and Megan) Volk of LeRoy; four sisters, Jerris L. (and Bob) Oest of Havana, Jackie L. (and Dan) Cogswell of Meredosia, Joy L. (and Todd) Mendenhall of Havana and Julia L. (and Sam) Gregory of Chicago; four brothers, James L. “Jim” McCombs of Rushville, Jon L. McCombs (and companion Kathleen Behymer) of Astoria, Joel L. McCombs (and Jean) of Rushville and Jan L. McCombs (and Sandy) of Littleton; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jerry L. and Jeffrey L. McCombs; and one sister, Janet L. (and Bill) Lavery.

She attended Schuyler County grade schools and graduated from Rushville High School with the class of 1965. Following high school, she attended Passavant Area Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with the class of 1969 as a Registered Nurse.

She left her true passion of the surgery team at Passavant to work in a nursing home. Her nursing then led her to the Brown County Public Health Department for a short time before she moved into the role she is largely remembered and loved for, Brown County School District Nurse from 1974-81. She instilled her passion of nursing with several students through the Future Nurses of America high school organization. In 1981, she returned to floor nursing at Sarah D. Culbertson Memorial Hospital where she remained until retirement in 2007, serving as a floor nurse, infectious control nurse and discharge planner.

She was raised in the Methodist faith but met a catholic priest while attending Passavant, who she was fond of and who shared with her the Catholic faith. She was baptized and confirmed a Catholic and was parishioner of Holy Family Church in Mount Sterling.

A funeral mass was held Monday in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling with Father Aaron Kuhn and Deacon Mike Ellerman officiating. Burial was in the Mount Sterling Catholic Cemetery. The Hendricker Funeral Home in Mount Sterling was in charge of arrangements.
