Ruth Vance, Fulton County’s Oldest Resident, Dies At Age 109

Ruth VanceRuth Vance, 109, of Astoria died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Astoria Gardens.

She was born Jan. 16, 1896, in Astoria, a daughter of William and Candace Eley VanNess. She married James Vance on Dec. 12, 1915, in Beardstown. He died in May 1964.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, George VanNess and Charles VanNess; and two sisters, Cora Horton and Leona Elgin.

Surviving are one daughter, Doris (and Wayne) Pugh of San Antonio; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

She and her husband farmed near Macomb.

She was a member of Astoria Church of the Brethren.

She was the oldest resident of Fulton County and as such was named Miss Millennium in Canton in 1999 at age 103.

She was Honored Citizen of Astoria Homecoming in 2003.

She recently received a letter from President George Bush marking her 109th birthday.

She was known by family, friends and neighbors for her sense of humor and her enjoyment of life.

Services were held Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home with Rev. Gary Schultz officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her church or to Astoria Gardens.
