CLETIE MAE (POTTS) VANWEY

Cletie Mae Vanwey Dies At Age 81

Cletie Mae Vanwey, wife of Isaac E. Vanwey, died on Oct. 3, at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville.

Mrs. Vanwey was born Dec. 27, 1888 in Lawrence County, Ill., and was married to Isaac E. Vanwey on Jan. 4, 1906 by Rev. J. C. Fowler at St. Francisville.

Both Rev. and Mrs. Vanwey were life long members of the former Church of the United Brethren in Christ. At the time of her death she was a member of the First United Methodist Church at St. Francisville.

Rev. Vanwey entered the active ministry and was appointed to the Oakwood Circuit in September of 1925 and served there for three years. During the years of their ministry they served the following churches in the Illinois conference: Elliott, two years; Astoria, three years; Flora, sixteen years; and the Trinity Church of Marshall, eight years.

Mrs. Vanwey believed that it was her husband’s responsibility to preach the gospel and her responsibility to keep the parsonage clean, neat and open to all the people they served. She had a deep concern for all their people and upheld them in her prayers. She was held in great esteem by all who knew her. She will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Knolah Cussen of Plymouth, Ind., Lola Sandlin, Lawrenceville; two sons, Lawrence Vanwey, St. Francisville, and Robert E. Vanwey, Lawrenceville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Three infants preceded her in death.

Memorial services were conducted in the Martin Funeral Home on Oct. 6th. Officiating were Rev. Harold Holliday, Rev. Frank Treadway and Rev. Lester Laur.

She was laid to rest in the Oaklawn Cemetery at St. Francisville.
