John UngerJohn Orson Unger, 85, of Rushville died at 11:50 p.m. Aug. 28, 2022, at Heritage Health in Beardstown.

He was born Sept. 29, 1936, in Camden Township, Schuyler County, a son of Julian and Irma Feld Unger.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda (and David) Thompson of Poplar Grove, Beth (and Matt) Turner of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Becky Unger Armstrong of Winnebago; eight grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Una Jean Claus and B. Jane Unger.

He was an Astoria High School graduate. He had several business ventures over the years including Coal Creek Sand and Gravel Company in the 1970s. The last was his bait and tackle shop.

He served as Mayor of the City of Rushville in the 1960s, during which time he was instrumental in starting Schuy-Rush Park.

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 17, at 303 Unger Drive (behind the bait shop). Immediately following the service, there will be a potluck. Feel free to bring your favorite dish to share. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville is in charge of arrangements.
