Harry L. Toland Of Macomb Dies

Harry L. Toland, 81, of rural Macomb died at 6:35 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 1990, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Sept. 21, 1908, in Clarence, Mo., a son of Herbert I. and Stella Switzer Toland. He married Rosann Smith on Dec. 31, 1935, in Bowling Green, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Trevor Toland of rural Macomb; two daughters, Treva Walker of Rushville and Tine Beck of Shelbyville, Ind.; nine granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by one son, Trenton, two brothers and three sisters.

He farmed all his adult life in the Macomb and Bardolph areas and owned the River Oak Farm. He also owned a farm in the Center community northeast of Good Hope for five years, where he organized the Center Stars 4-H Club. In 1951, he purchased the Toland land trust in Macomb Township. He was a well-known horse and mule breeder.

He was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church near Macomb, the Illinois Draft Horse and Mule Association, the McDonough County Historical Society, the Argyle Antique Gas Engine Association, and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. this morning at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Bardolph Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
