VeteranL. E. Thornton Chicago, Dies In Hospital

Funeral Here Saturday, Masonic and Legion Services Conducted

Laurence E. Thornton of Chicago, died at the St. Lukes hospital, Chicago, on Tuesday of last week, following an operation.

Mr. Thornton was born August 7, 1900, on a farm near Browning, a son of Chester and Amelia Gale Thornton. His mother and an only brother preceded him in death.

On Dec. 26, 1923, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Mink of Beardstown. She with the father survive.

Laurence attended school at Ridgeville near Browning and graduated from the Rushville high school. He then took a three year course in Civil Engineering at the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio.

From 1923-25 and from 1925-1941 he worked for the Chicago & Alton railroad. From 1941 until the time of his death he worked for the Baltimore, Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad Co., and held the office of Superintendent at the time of his death.

During World War II he volunteered his services to his country and served for more than two years as an army colonel in Europe. At the end of World War II he was placed on the reserve list as a colonel of the United States Army.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Astoria and the American Legion post.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Astoria, conducted by Rev. Fred Thompson and Rev. H. D. Simmons. Masonic services were conducted by the Astoria Masonic lodge. At the grave military services were conducted by the Astoria Post 25, of the American Legion. Burial was in the Astoria cemetery.

Lawrence E. Thornton Dies In Chicago

Lawrence E. Thornton, 50 of Chicago, superintendent of the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad Co., died yesterday in St. Lukes hospital. Mr. Thornton had held that position since Jan. 1, 1942, except for more than two years in which he served as an army colonel in Europe in World War II. He was with the Burlington railroad from 1923 to 1925, and the Alton railroad from 1925 to 1941.

His widow, Jeanette, survives. Funeral services will be held in the Astoria Methodist church Saturday, at 2:00 p.m.

Emerson Thornton, 50, died yesterday at St. Luke’s hospital, Chicago. Cline Horton went to Chicago and will bring the body to Astoria. He is a son of Chester Thornton of Astoria.
