Jean ShaferJean Shafer, 80, of Bushnell died at 6 a.m. July 6, 2023, at Grand Prairie Assisted Living in Macomb.

She was born Feb. 5, 1943, in Galesburg, a daughter of Floyd and Eleanor Morrow Smith. She married Lee Shafer.

Surviving are three children, Janet (and Steve) Young of Vermont, Jamie (and Lissa) Shafer of Bushnell and John (and Andrea) Shafer of Springfield; one sister, Rachel (and Terry) Hunter of Wentzville, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Marlin Smith; and two sisters, Dorothy Richardson and Betty Dye.

After graduating from Bushnell-Prairie City High School, she attended Burlington Beauty Academy. She worked for Lee Merrill’s Beauty Salon in Monmouth before moving to Chicago with her family. During their time in Chicago, she worked for Admiral Color Tube division as an executive secretary. Upon returning to Bushnell in 1970, she was active while raising her family, by babysitting and serving in her church as the pianist, being a Sunday school teacher and serving on various committees and special programs. As her children grew and she wasn’t needed at home as much, she worked as the Bushnell United Methodist Church secretary for several years and also the Bushnell Recreation and Cultural Center.

Cremation Rites were accorded by Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at Bushnell Christian Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastors Terry Broady and Rex Featherlin will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Bushnell Christian Church or to McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program.
