Rod SchoonoverRod Schoonover, 81, of Rushville died at 1:45 a.m. May 10, 2020, at the Rushville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Mount Sterling, a son of John Luther and Doris Stephens Schoonover. He married Barbara Shaver on Aug. 12, 1960, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jody (and Larry) Douglas of Little Chute, Wis.; two sons, Andy (and April) Schoonover of Camden and Mark (and Keli) Schoonover of Rushville; one sister, Sandra (and Tom) Harrington of Kirkland, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Craig Schoonover.

He was a science and industrial arts teacher at Rushville High School for 20 years. He spent his summers operating R & A Construction, he was an agent for Country Companies Life Insurance Company for nine years and he spent several years working as a foreman in the local coal mine. He was a football, track and cross country coach, a track official and later became a starter and trainer for many athletes. After retirement, he owned and operated Fowl Play Hunting Club, where he loved guiding hunts. He also raised and trained upland bird dogs for several years.

He attended Rushville First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rushville Masonic Lodge #9 AM & FM and Rushville Odd Fellows Lodge #24. He served as a Buena Vista Township Trustee for over 20 years.

A private family service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Randy McGeehon and David Haney officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
