Harold SmithHarold E. Smith, 81, of Rushville died at 9:27 a.m. Dec. 10, 2016, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 5, 1935, at his home in Ripley, a son of Jesse Ray and Alta Porter Smith. He married Norma Yvonne Curless on Sept. 2, 1955, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Sue (and Rick) Boyd of Rushville; one nephew, Rick (and Debra) Schisler of Casa Grande, Ariz.; one great niece; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Smith; one nephew, John R. Smith; and one niece, Delores Burke.

He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve from 1957-63 where he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Ord, Calif.

In 1958, he began working as a salesman for Pickinpaugh Motors and then Green Motors until 1982. From 1973 to 1982 he served as Schuyler County Deputy. He then was elected as the Schuyler County Treasurer until retiring in 2004. After retiring, he began working for Eyler Auto Center.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Rushville. He was a volunteer firefighter, Rushville City Councilman, member of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM #9 and a member of Ansar Shrine of Springfield. He took an active role each year in planning the annual Culbertson Memorial Hospital Golf Outing.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Mr. David Haney officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery with Military Honors by a U.S. Army Honors Detail and Schuyler American Legion Post #4.
