Larry "Smitty" SmithLarry "Smitty" Smith, 70, of Lewistown died Aug. 1, 2013.

He was born April 4, 1943, in Canton, a son of Earl E. and Vera Breckenridge Smith. He married Linda Schnarr on Dec. 15, 1963, in Lewistown. She survives.

Also surviving are two children, Lonnie (and Kathy) Smith and Lana (and Travis) Koontz; two siblings, Ed (and Carol) Smith and David (and Dorothy) Smith; and three grandchildren.

He attended a country school, then town school and graduated from LCHS in 1961. He was honored with the DeKalb FFA Award.

He held all offices for Lewistown Optimist Club and Old Fashion 4th of July Committee. He was a member of Coachman and Road Runners Car Clubs, Order of Oddfellows and first co-chair with Linda of the LCHS Alumni committee. He was a volunteer fireman and Boy Scout leader.

He began driving a tractor around age 7 to help on the family farm. After graduation, he worked in Chicago at a glass factory and as a deck hand for the Ohio River Barge Co. He started at International Harvester in 1963, retiring from Navistar in 1992. He was a tree trimmer and a rental manager of J&B Storage in New Palestine, Ind. He also worked for KSI Co. at National Starch in Indianapolis.

He attended Lewistown United Methodist Church.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lewistown United Methodist Church with pastors Deryck Sonaram and Randy Munson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Henry-Lange Memorial Home in Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his grandchildren's college education funds, First United Methodist Church in Lewistown or consider registering as an organ donor in honor of Lonnie, a nine-year transplant survivor.
