He was born Oct. 30, 1958, in Phoenix, Ariz., the son of Donald Lee and Lavonn Mathis Shelton. He married Lynne Thornton on July 15, 1983, in Rushville. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Lavonn Guthals and husband, Charles and his stepmother, Gladys Shelton, all of Clovis, N.M.; one daughter, Shardai Shelton of Champaign; one son, Jarod Shelton of Carbondale; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He first worked as a martial art trainer at various military bases. While in college, he worked for an optometrist. He later worked at Feigl's Grocery Store in Rushville and was owner of S and S Construction in Rushville. He worked the last 15 years for R. D. Lawrence Construction in Springfield.
He was a 25-year member of Carpenter's Local 904.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. John Sowers officiating. Burial will follow in Rushville City Cemetery. Visitation will be held an hour before service time on Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to his grandson's education fund in care of Rushville State Bank.
