William Delbert Shawgo, 87, of Canton died at 4:07 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at his home.

He was born July 12, 1918, in Ipava, a son of George and Eva Jones Shawgo. He married Lois W. McCarty on Oct. 8, 1938, in Keokuk, Iowa. She died Feb. 16, 1998.

He also was preceded in death by three grandchildren.

Surviving are two sons, Roger (and Sylvia) of Farmington and Rick (and Darla) of Sparta; one daughter, Barbara (and John) Grant of Canton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles of Missouri; and four sisters, Lela Shaw, Thelma Starcevich and Wilma Long, all of Canton, and Nelda Brush of Lewistown.

He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 644 in Fairview.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 22 years, retiring in 1982. He also was a lifelong self-employed farmer in the Fairview and Ipava areas. He served as a volunteer fireman in Fairview and Rapatee for 30 years.

He was a former member of Moose Lodge 784 and a volunteer with the American Red Cross in Canton.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton and was active in its food pantry program.

Services were held Saturday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Keith Jones officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Fairview.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Food Pantry or the American Red Cross.
