John SheetsJohn M. Sheets, 85, of rural West Union died at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Royal Oaks Health Care Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

He was born Sept. 14, 1918, in York Township, Clark County, a son of Samuel and Amanda Shotwell Sheets. He married Virginia Rose Kiefer on Dec. 31, 1949. She died Feb. 24, 1998.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Sheets Jr.; and two sisters, Wilma Jackson and Ruth Fetters.

Surviving are three sons, Gary (and Pennie) of Astoria, Steve (and Tonja) of rural West Union and Tony (and Debbie) of Hendersonville, Tenn.; one daughter, Johnna (and Rocky) Beabout of rural Robinson; one sister, Edna Hittle of Indianapolis, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the signal corps.

He was a member of West Union American Legion Post 1130, a 50-year member of York Lodge 313 AF&AM of West Union and a member of West Union Chapter 776, Order of the Eastern Star. He also had served as Clark County Farm Bureau director for many years.

He was a lifetime member of the West Union Christian Church, having served in numerous capacities, and was an elder for many years.

Services were held Saturday at the West Union Christian Church with Tom Cooperider and Gary Sheets officiating. Burial was in Harrison Cemetery, near West Union, with military graveside rites performed by American Legion Posts 1130 and 742. Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Sheets preaching scholarship, Johnson Bible College.
