Harold Steele

Harold V. Steele, 74, of Astoria died at 8:05 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Bell County, Ky., a son of Elmer and Ollie Frost Steele. He married Clodina Singo on Jan. 14, 1953, in Pennington Gap, Va. She died April 24, 1989.

He also was preceded in death by one sister, Maude Jean Jesse; and five brothers, James Elliot, Walt Elliot Jr., Burt Elliot, Guy Steele and Arlie Steele.

Surviving are two sons, Harold Jr. (and Debra) of Glasford and Jeff (and Jamie) of Astoria; one sister, Mary Lou (and James) Payne of Prescott, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

He was an Air Force veteran.

He was an electrician at Amax Coal Co. at Sun Spot Mine in Vermont, Ill., for 27 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of United Mine Workers of America.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Cliff Parry officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center, Astoria Rescue Squad or the Astoria Township Cemetery Association.
