Merritt Shirley

Merritt P. Shirley, 84, of Havana died at 8:35 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Mason District Hospital in Havana.

He was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Bath Township, Mason County, a son of James and Belle Lippert Shirley. He married Veldora “Dody” Bohm on Sept. 12, 1940, in Havana. She died July 22, 1991. He also was preceded in death by one grandson, four sisters and one brother.

Surviving are one son, Paul of Springfield; one daughter, Helen Vanderveen of Havana; three grandchildren; four great-grandsons; one brother, Jim of Astoria; two sisters, Bertha Lacey of Hopedale and Ferne Jones of Metamora; and several nieces and nephews.

A member of IBEW Local 51, he retired from Illinois Power as a turbine operator.

He was a member of Central Christian Church, where services were held at noon today with Rev. L. Arvil Bass officiating. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Alzheimer’s Association or his church.
