Marshall Glade Smith, 78, of Bradenton, Fla., died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.

He was born March 16, 1918, in Bernadotte, a son of James O. and Mazie M. (Swise) Smith. He married Mary Ester Mumaw on March 17, 1940. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

He is survived by one son, James R. Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin Smith of Prairie City and Harry Smith of Bushnell; three sisters, Twila Ferry of Galesburg, Doris Long of Bushnell and Doreen Lockwood of Prairie City.

He was born and raised in Bernadotte and farmed for many years near Avon. He attended college at Western Illinois University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II being wounded and decorated for the Battle of the Bulge. He later moved to Littleton, where he farmed and for the last 30 years had resided in Bradenton.

Graveside services were held this morning at the Avon Cemetery in Avon. Corman Memorial Home in Avon was in charge of arrangements.
