Freeman Stambaugh

Freeman D. Stambaugh, 83, of rural Astoria, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at 9:15 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born May 4, 1913, in Astoria Township, Fulton County, a son of John and Hannah Isabelle Sullivan Stambaugh. He married Mary Elizabeth Trone on Sept. 22, 1932, in Astoria. She preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1978. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, two brothers, five half-brothers and one half-sister.

Surviving are two sons, Richard D. Stambaugh and Paul Stambaugh, both of Astoria; one daughter, Verna McCormick of Astoria; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

He worked for Caterpillar for 18 years, retiring in 1976 and farmed. He was a member of the Astoria Assembly of God Church and Fulton County Farm Bureau.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Phillip Derry and Gary Sheets officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Astoria.

Memorials may be given to the Astoria Assembly of God Church.
