Services for Charles H. Shempf Sr., 67, of Peoria, who was pronounced dead at 2 p.m. Friday, April 12, 1996, on the St. John’s River in De Land, Fla., were held Monday at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel with Rev. Richard Horvath officiating. Burial was in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria, where military rites were accorded by American Legion Post 979.

He was killed in a boating accident.

He was born May 31, 1928, in New York City, the son of Archie and Bessie Cooley Shempf. He married Donna D. Walburg on Oct. 23, 1948, in Peoria. She died Oct. 1, 1981, in Peoria.

He later married Alberta J. Blevins on Sept. 18, 1992, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Charlette) Hancock of Kingston Mines and Mrs. Gary (Paulette) Hand of Bartonville; two sons, Edward of Peoria and Charles Jr. of Bartonville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Viola Clauss and Roxanne Smock, both of Peoria.

A member of Laborers Local 165 for 35 years, he was a member from March 1948 until he retired in July 1989. He was its business agent for the last 19 years. A World War II Navy veteran, he served on the USS Courtland. He was a member of American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and was active in the Limestone Little League program. He was of the Catholic faith.

Memorials may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church in Peoria or St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo.

The Shempfs were residents in Browning often during weekends residing at their trailer in town.
