Alvin E. Sawings, 74, of Vermont died at 6 p.m. Monday, May 1, 1995 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

He was born Jan. 5, 1921, a son of Archie and Minnie Otto Sawings and was reared and educated in Quinney, Wis. He married Lorna Petermann in Milwaukee, Wis. July 12, 1941. She preceded him in death June 20, 1989.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn (Fred) Holden of Vermont; one sister, Mrs. Myrta (Peter) Tomasino of Haywood, Wis.; and two nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

He and his wife moved to Oquawka in 1950. He was a tent evangelist from 1950 to 1954 in the Rushville-Macomb area. He pastored in Keokuk, Iowa at the Deliverance Tabernacle and at the Eagle Community Church near Colchester for 24 years, retiring in 1986. He had lived in Vermont for the last 14 years. He served in the Army during World War II.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday in the Oquawka Cemetery with Rev. John Grimes of the Olena Community Church officiating.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel in Monmouth where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
