VeteranGuy L. St. Clair Of Canton Dies

Guy L. St. Clair, 74, of Canton, died at 11:18 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 1990 at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born Aug. 31, 1915, in Vermont, the son of Charles L. and Ethel (Severans) St. Clair. He married Hermina Ashby on Feb. 22, 1936, in Canton. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Donald of Canton and Sgt. Maj. Gary L. of West Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Joyce) Latimer and Mrs. Ronald (Sarah Ann) Reith, both of Canton; his stepmother, Olga St. Clair of Canton; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Otis of Canton; one sister, Mrs. Wilma Deushane of rural Canton; one stepbrother, Clint Hunt of Wisconsin; and three stepsisters, Mrs. Rose Russell of Indiana, Mrs. Catherine Dilts of Fiatt and Miss Ruth Hunt of Canton.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

He was owner and operator of the Square Deal Market in Canton and Guy’s Market in Dunlap. After retiring in 1976, he drove a school bus for District 66 for several years. He later worked for Crawford’s Floor Covering in Canton.

A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he was past commander of American Legion Post 16 in Canton and had been awarded a lifetime membership. He was a past 15th District commander of the American Legion and past chef de gare of the Fulton County Voiture 812. He was past Fifth District sous grand cheminot and a member of Mason Lodge 34, AF&AM of Canton, Peoria Consistory and Mohammed Temple, Shrine.

He was an alderman for the city of Canton for two terms from 1944 to 1952. He served several terms on the Canton Planning and Zoning board and was a member and served on the board of directors for the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. He served four years on the Fulton County Board and was a member of the Fulton County Civil Defense. He served as village trustee and mayor of Dunlap. He was a Republican precinct committeeman.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Wentz officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, with military rites accorded.

Masonic services were held Thursday evening at the Memorial Home.
