Found Dead Near Astoria

John S. P. Smith, Bachelor, Residing Alone Succumbs To Natural Causes

John S. P. Smith, 72, a bachelor, who resided southwest of here, was found dead Sunday afternoon at his home by two neighbors, Roy Hopkins and Ralph Sill. Becoming alarmed after going to the Smith home Sunday morning and again during the early afternoon and not seeing Smith about and his chores undone, Hopkins went to the Sill home, the two returning and forcing entrance into Smith’s home. He lived alone for several years.

Indications pointed to the fact that Smith’s death occurred some time Saturday night. He was in town Saturday afternoon.

Smith was born Sept. 24, 1868 near Astoria, a son of Harvey and Mary E. (Heflin) Smith. There are no brothers or sisters.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Shawgo Memorial Home. Burial in Oak Grove cemetery southwest of here.

Dr. Mark S. Nelson, Fulton county coroner, conducted an inquiry into his death. Death, it was found, resulted from natural causes.
