LEVI W. SPRENKEL

Former Astoria Man Killed

L. W. Sprenkel, 71, owner of the Quinter Nursery at Quinter, Kan., was killed and his son Charley suffered severe injuries and cuts in an automobile accident Thursday evening, Aug. 12, when their car left the road about a quarter of a mile from the Cabbel Jamison farm four miles southeast of Quinter.

Enroute home from a rabbit hunting trip, Mr. Sprenkel’s car, which was being driven by his son, hit rough places at a road intersection, failed to right itself, took to the ditch and overturned several times.

Mr. Sprenkel was killed instantly. His son suffered from shock and could give only a meager account of the accident when Merle Jamison, who witnessed the accident from his home, went to the rescue. Charles Graham working in a nearby field, also saw the accident. Charley was taken to the Quinter hospital where he was treated for cuts received about the head and ear, and for fractured ribs. The car in which the two men were riding was a complete wreck. His son Orley, also lost his life in an automobile accident eleven years ago and a few hours later than this accident.

Levi W. Sprenkel was born in York, Pa., Nov. 8, 1868, and departed this life Sept. 12, 1940, being 71 years, 10 months and 4 days of age. He was united in marriage to Mary Danner, Oct. 6, 1896 at Lewistown, Ill. To this union four children were born: Ada, Emmert, Chas. and Orley. Preceding him in death were his wife and youngest son Orley. Mrs. Sprenkel departed this life on March 12, 1937, and Orley on Sept. 13, 1929. Surviving children are: Mrs. Ralph Tuttle, Emmert and Charlie of Quinter, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Kanus of Quinter, and Mrs. Will Wampler of Knobnoster, Mo., and eleven grandchildren.

Mr. Sprenkel with his family moved to a farm west of Quinter in November, 1908, where he resided until 1920, moving to town where he built up one of the show places of the city, the Quinter Nursery. Proof of the big-heartedness of this kindly man is the fact that with the aid of his good wife he not only provided well for his own little family in every way but also shared his home, provided for and raised three orphaned children, Noah Danner of Adair, Grace Vicent of Macomb, Ill., and Elsie Sprenkel of Denver, Colo.

The funeral was held at the Church of the Brethren on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 11 o’clock, conducted by Rev. D. A. Crist. Burial in the Quinter cemetery.
