JAMES ELWOOD “DICK” SMITH

Former Astorian Dies At Age Of 83

Mrs. Lavina Smith of Bushnell received the sad news of the death of her brother-in-law, James Elwood Smith, familiarly called Dick, which occurred at Greeley, Colo., Oct. 26, in his 83rd year. His last visit here was two years ago, leaving his niece’s Mrs. Frank Rebman’s home to visit his grandchildren in Oklahoma. After visiting his nephews, Lewis and Harry Smith this summer he had gone to his daughter’s only a month ago where he passed away, after a short illness of flu.

Mr. Smith was the youngest son of Thomas and Unity Smith, old time residents of Astoria township, they coming from Newcastle, Ohio, when Dick was a small boy and locating on a farm just north of Astoria where he grew to manhood and where he married Etta Maxwell of Ipava, Ill. To this union three children were born, Ora, Lemmual and Daisy. He lived near Ipava for some years, later going to Nebraska and then Oklahoma, where his wife died. He was the last of his family. Four sisters, Mrs. Phebe Rakestraw, Manda Levis, Jane Shields and an infant sister dying years ago, also three brothers, Uriah, Lem and Lewis Smith preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his death one daughter Daisy Savits of Greeley, Colo., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at the funeral home at Greeley, attended by a large number of friends as he and his daughter had lived there many years. The flowers were profuse and beautiful. A double sadness is that the daughter, was and is yet very sick of the same disease that took Mr. Smith’s life.
