SUSAN M. (PALMER) STEELE

Former Astoria Woman Dies At Peoria Home

Mrs. James Steel, former Astoria resident, died at the home of her son, Robert in Peoria Monday following a stroke from which she failed to rally. Mrs. Steel was 75 years of age.

She was born in Astoria in 1855, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Palmer. The only surviving living relative is Mrs. Albert McNett of Canton, who is her niece.

[Laura’s note: According to her tombstone and other records, her last name was spelled “Steele” rather than “Steel”.]

A Correction

Mr. A. N. Price: — Will you kindly correct the mis-statement in the notice of Mrs. Steel’s death last week, wherein she is credited with but one surviving relative — Mrs. McNett?

She is survived by one brother, Hon. Joel Palmer, nearly 87, at the Soldiers’ Home, Los Angeles, and several nephews and nieces. Among the latter are Mrs. Lizzie Dudley, Mrs. Albert McNett, William Palmer and their three families of Canton, Walter Palmer and family of Vermont, Charles C. Palmer and family, Omaha, Nebr., and others at Wentachee, Wash., Wauseon, O., Chicago and elsewhere.

Two of her five brothers, Joel and John B. were G. A. R. men and teachers. John was with E. R. Boyer in the Astoria schools the year 1878 and taught in Fulton county some 30 years before taking his family to Washington.

Mrs. Steel (Susan Palmer) was the last of five sisters. She was a schoolmate of this scribe’s two years in 1885-6, at the Marion old log school house, and one of 81 pupils at the same place six months in 1871.

This worthy pioneer family was among our first neighbors in 1865, when we settled here.

Very truly yours,
E. H. Diehl.
