Duck Hunter Killed

Monday evening about 6 o’clock the remains of Captain C. S. Spofford, who was accidentally shot while hunting ducks south of Liverpool Monday afternoon were taken in a launch to Havana where the inquest was held by the coroner of Mason county. The accident occurred along the Illinois river in Mason county.

Charles High of Liverpool was pushing the boat for Spofford when the accident occurred.

The deceased was about 42 years of age and had gone to Liverpool on Saturday where he took a room in the Crawford Inn. His home was in Chicago, living at 225 Garfield avenue.

At the inquest High stated that he had seen Spofford leave the blind he was behind and go to the boat with two guns in his hands. He next heard an explosion and turning saw Spofford had fallen to the ground. High went to his assistance but found that he was too late. The charge of shot had struck the stomach and had passed upward, penetrating the heart. Death was instant.
