CORDA SHEETS

Young Lady Dies

Miss Corda Sheets, aged 35 years, daughter of Frank Sheets of Lewistown died in Galesburg Sunday evening in the Custer hotel from an illegal operation.

The young lady left her home in Lewistown Friday and it is presumed she went to Galesburg. At the coroner’s inquest held Monday it was brought out that the young lady came to Galesburg Friday and registered at the Custer hotel in the afternoon and when she registered, she appeared to be in the best of health; that she consulted Dr. W. S. Williamson in his office Friday between two and three o’clock in the afternoon; that the physician informed her that she had taken abortives; that he advised her to go home, but she refused; that she subsequently went to a hotel; that she again called him on Saturday; that on that day she was advised to go to a hospital, but refused and also refused to divulge her name or the name of her parents; that she could not bear to have her father know of her disgrace.

It came out that Mrs. Palmeter a nurse, was called by Dr. Williamson to call on the young lady at her room at the hotel Saturday evening and at that time the young lady was seriously ill and that the visits of the physician and nurse was without the knowledge of the hotel authorities.

Dr. Williamson and Mrs. Lula Palmeter were held to the grand jury on recommendation of the coroner’s jury.

The young lady was of a prominent family and was highly respected in the community in which she lived and the circumstances which attended her death was a shock to the people of that city.
