JULIA (HOLMES) BABCOCK SMITH

Mrs. Jas. Smith Demise

Julia Holmes, daughter of Abner Holmes and wife, was born in Rochester, New York, July 19, 1822. In early womanhood she moved with her parents, to Knox county, Ohio. She was married to Henry A. Babcock, Nov. 9th, 1845, and after a few years they removed to Mason county, Illinois, where they resided until 1855, when they moved to Fulton county, buying a farm near Ipava, and in common with all early settlers they endured many privations and hardships.

To them were born three sons and five daughters, all of whom are living. Her husband, Mr. Babcock, died Feb. 5, 1865, but with untiring energy and devotion she raised her children to honored manhood and womanhood.

In 1872, she was united in marriage to James Smith, who died in Ipava, in 1907, and since his death, her home has been with her children.

For many years Mrs. Smith has been an earnest christian woman and devoted to her family and friends. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rachel Howard, Sunday, August 8th, 1909, at 10:45 p.m. aged 87 years and twenty days.

Short funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Howard four miles southwest of Astoria. The remains were laid to rest in the Howard cemetery northeast of Summum. Funeral services were conducted by the Christian minister, Eld. F. Boyd.
