In the April number of Newspaperdom is the following notice of the late Geo. H. Scripps:

“Of no little prominence in daily newspaper publishing was George H. Scripps, who died April 13th, in San Diego, at the age of 60 years. It is said of Mr. Scripps that he had more and greater newspaper investments than most publishers care to manage to acquire in an even longer lifetime.

“Mr. Scripps with his brother, E. W., and Milton A. McRae, comprised the Scripps-McRae league partnership, owners of the Cincinnati Post, Cleveland Press, St. Louis Chronicle, Kansas City World, Covington Post, San Francisco Report, Los Angeles Herald, Seattle Star, San Diego Sun and Omaha News. Mr. Scripps was moreover one of the proprietors of the Detroit Evening News and Detroit Tribune.

“Mr. Scripps was born in England, but came to this country when a child, and was reared on a farm near Rushville, Ill. He was one of the first to enlist in the northern army at the time of the civil war, and during his service suffered impairment of health from which he never fully recovered. He began his journalistic career with the Detroit Evening News, a quarter of a century ago. Success brought wealth, and made possible, backed by Mr. Scripps’ indomitable energy, the various ventures that have since become prosperous newspaper properties.”

Mr. Scripps was a brother-in-law of J. S. Winters of Lewistown.
